Karan's Story....

In late 2006, my caregiving days began.  Initially it was a long distance situation, for an older brother who struggled with alcohol addiction and eventually passed away in 2009. I was also the caregiver for both my parents who lived local.  First, my dad, from 2008-2010 and then my mom, from 2010-2016. Both lived long wonderful lives passing at 93 and 92, respectively.   Caregiving for loved ones is such an honor, but a definite toll on each individual providing the care.

Like many others, I was a member of the Sandwich Generation, balancing my time between caring for loved ones, raising 3 children and running an independently owned business.  Given the 10 consecutive years I was caregiving, stress was taking a toll on me.  In late, 2017, I was diagnosed with Invasive Lobular Breast Cancer.  I was in shock, to say the least!  I had never dreamed I would join this club.  I was not your typical candidate for breast cancer; I was always in excellent health, according to my doctors.  Every doctor I saw after my diagnosis came to the same conclusion.....the 10 consecutive years of constant stress was ranked high among the #1 risk factor that stood out on my case.  I knew then, I would be using my experiences in caregiving and breast cancer to help others.  I wasn't crystal clear, at that moment, what that would look like, but God told me he would show me the way so I embraced my journey and This Little Light continued to form, from my mind, to a reality in July, 2020.
